WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS ABOUT HOMOSEXUALITY

It may surprise you that the Bible has a lot to say about human sexual conduct. Did you know that the Bible even has a lot to say about gays (male and female). God has very strong views on the subject, and what he says about it is very clear and straight to the point.

'You shall not lie with a male as with a woman. It is an abomination. -- Leviticus 18:22 `If a man lies with a male as he lies with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination. They shall surely be put to death. Their blood shall be upon them. -- Leviticus 20:13

And what about transvestites?

'A woman shall not wear anything that pertains to a man, nor shall a man put on a woman's garment, for all who do so are an abomination to the LORD your God. -- Deuteronomy 22:5

The Bible even includes several stories about homosexuals and does not paint them in a good light at all.

As they were enjoying themselves, suddenly certain men of the city, perverted men, surrounded the house and beat on the door. They spoke to the master of the house, the old man, saying, "Bring out the man who came to your house, that we may know him carnally!" But the man, the master of the house, went out to them and said to them, "No, my brethren! I beg you, do not act so wickedly! Seeing this man has come into my house, do not commit this outrage. "Look, here is my virgin daughter and the man's concubine; let me bring them out now. Humble them, and do with them as you please; but to this man do not do such a vile thing!" -- Judges 19:22-24

And in another place describing Sodom and Gomorrah shortly before its destruction it says,

Now before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, both old and young, all the people from every quarter, surrounded the house. And they called to Lot and said to him, "Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us that we may know them carnally." So Lot went out to them through the doorway, shut the door behind him, and said, "Please, my brethren, do not do so wickedly! -- Genesis 19:4-7

God punished the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah for their wickedness as an example to others.

"and turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes, condemned them to destruction, making them an example to those who afterward would live ungodly; -- 2 Peter 2:6

But what does God think of the people who ignore this example.

Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use forwhat is against nature. Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due. And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting; being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers, backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful; who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them. -- Romans 1:24-32

If God is consistent, how could he destroy one group of people and let others go free? If God destroyed the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah for sexual misconduct, then why hasn't King's Cross or Bangkok or San Francisco been consumed by fire? How does God deal with those who practise these things?

Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. -- 1 Corinthians 6:10

Since the unrighteous cannot enter the kingdom of God it might surprise you to discover that some of the Christians in the Corinthian church were former homosexuals! The next verse says,

And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God. -- 1 Corinthians 6:11

Praise God that he can change lives and give us victory over those human lusts which dominate our behavior. This is good news for those who have been taught that homosexuals are genetically locked into their "sexuality". The Bible gives some sound advice to those who through God's Spirit have been freed from the enslaving power of sin.

Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body. -- 1 Corinthians 6:18

Man's laws are changeable but God's laws are unbending. God wants us to compare our behavior to the principles that he has set, so that through his law we might recognize that we have fallen short of his standard. If we recognize that we are sinners then we can come to him to ask him to forgive us and to renew our minds so that we can live righteously through his Spirit.

"knowing this: that the law is not made for a righteous person, but for the lawless and insubordinate, for the ungodly and for sinners, for the unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, for fornicators, for sodomites, for kidnappers, for liars, for perjurers, and if there is any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine, according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God which was committed to my trust. -- 1 Timothy 1:9-11

Jesus Christ can change lives. He wants to give you the victory over sin and death. You cannot do it without his help. Ask him to help you with it today and tomorrow. Ask him for the gift of his Spirit which will enable you to defeat the power of sin in your life.
